Reading is Overrated?

2주 전쯤 Guardian에서 흥미로운 기사를 읽었다.

"Too many people will have you believe that our very humanity resides in books 

- and that's reading a little too much into it"

이 Rick Gekoski가 단적으로 하고 싶은 말이었을 수도 있지만

그렇다고 아예 책을 읽지 말자는 얘기도 아닌데

거품을 문 "reader"들의 반응도 그 기사 못지않게 흥미로웠다.

책 읽는 것을 꽤 좋아하는 나이지만

그가 기사의 마지막 즈음 Philip Larkin을 인용할 때

-"I should never call myself a book lover any more than a people lover.

It all depends what's inside them"-

그의 의도에 어느 정도 동감하기도 했다.

특히

"What we read can affect us vitally, penetrate, stimulate and inform us, but not always in the right ways, or at the right times, or about the right things. [...] if it were true that wide and deep reading redounds wholly positively on the development of a wholesome self, consider a typical member of a university English department, and despair."

하는 부분에 살짝 고개를 끄덕이며 쓴웃음을 지었다.

이번 학기 대학원 수강 편람을 조회하며 한숨쉬었던 이유와 별반 다르지 않게.

요즘 마케팅의 수단으로

"책읽지마라"라는 식의 거칠고 자극적인 제목을 달고

서점에 누워있는 동안 고의적으로 자신의 정체를 잊기로 한

책들이 꽤 나오고 있는 듯하다.

그런 책들 아직 안읽어봐서

진짜 책읽지 말라고 하는 책들인지 모르겠지만

Philip Larkin이 위에서 하는 말과 어느 정도 비슷한 맥락이라면

얼마든지 너그러워 질 수 있지 않을까

하면서도.

사실 이 기사에서 Rick Gekoski씨가

반박하기 위해, 혹은 논란의 여지를 제공하기 위해,

부러 앞뒤 문맥을 다 떼어놓고 인용한 말들에 훨씬 더 공감한다:
